Taglines in Lifting
Simple Do's
and Don'ts
for Safer
Load Control

When a load is lifted, the job is not over — it has just begun. A simple rope, used correctly, can make all the difference.

A tagline should help you stay away from the load — not bring you closer to it.

— Core principle of safe load handling

Whatare theyfor?

Suspended loads can swing, rotate, or drift — especially under wind, crane movement, or uneven load geometry. This is where taglines come in.

A tagline, when used correctly, allows riggers to guide a load while keeping a safer distance from it. But like most things in lifting, how you use it matters more than what you use.

01

What Taglines
Help With

01
Control Rotation
Prevent a load from spinning on the hook due to wind vane effects or line spin-up during hoisting.
02
Reduce Swing
Dampen pendulum-type lateral movement during lifting, travel, or when wind gusts destabilise the load.
03
Position the Load
Guide the load into its final setting position with precise directional control during placement.
04
Maintain Distance
Keep handlers safely away from the load, removing the need for direct hand contact during movement.
The Do's
01
Keep a safe distance
Always use the tagline to stay away from the load — never step in close unless absolutely required by the task.
02
Use the right length
Long enough to keep you outside the fall zone and avoid steep pulling angles. Too short loses control; too long is hard to manage.
03
Attach at strong points
Use robust, structural attachment points — ends or edges of the load give better rotational control. Avoid weak or moving parts.
04
Guide smoothly, not forcefully
A tagline is for guiding — smooth, controlled inputs work better and safer than aggressive pulling.
05
Use multiple lines when needed
For long or wide loads, one tagline may not be enough. Two or more lines can manage both rotation and alignment.
06
Keep communication clear
Tagline handlers and the crane operator must stay coordinated throughout the lift. Good communication equals safer, smoother operations.
The Don'ts
01
Never wrap it around your hand
If the load moves suddenly, a wrapped line can pull you directly into the hazard zone. This is one of the most common and serious mistakes.
02
Don't stand under or near the load
A tagline is designed to keep you away from the load — not bring you closer to it. Never position yourself within the fall or swing zone.
03
Don't let it drag uncontrolled
A loose rope can tangle, catch on structures, or create a trip hazard for other workers in the area.
04
Don't use it to correct misalignment
Taglines are not meant to fix major rigging setup problems or pull loads out of plumb. That requires a reassessment of the lift plan.
05
Don't use damaged or improvised rope
Worn, unsuitable, or improvised ropes reduce grip, increase risk, and become unpredictable under load.
06
Never step into a loop
A loop in a tagline can trap a foot or leg instantly if the load moves. Keep the free end tidy and never stand in or through it.
Remember
A tagline is for guiding — not for pulling a load into position by force. If a load needs significant repositioning, that is a rigging setup problem, not a tagline problem.

Why Anti-Tangle
Design Matters

In real-world conditions, taglines don't stay clean and straight. They pick up dirt, grease, and moisture. They coil and twist. A rope that's hard to manage is a rope that's harder to control — and harder to release when it counts.

Problem
Tangling & Coiling
Standard ropes twist under load, making handling unpredictable.
Solution
Semi-Stiff Construction
A semi-stiff rope resists tangling and stays manageable throughout the lift.
Problem
Poor Grip When Wet
Moisture and grease reduce grip, especially in outdoor or marine operations.
Solution
Braided Cover Design
A woven outer cover maintains grip and resists abrasion in tough conditions.

What a Good
Tagline Should Do

01
Resist tangling
Stay manageable even after repeated use and storage
02
Stay manageable during the lift
Not too stiff, not too limp — a balance that gives control
03
Provide reliable grip
Secure in the hand even in wet or greasy site conditions
04
Be easy to attach and release
Quick-connect terminations that don't fumble under pressure

Final
Thought

Taglines are simple — but the way they are used makes all the difference. Good planning, correct positioning, and the right design can make suspended-load handling more controlled and more predictable.

They are one of the most widely used tools in lifting operations precisely because they work — when chosen correctly and used correctly.

A tagline should help you stay away from the load — not bring you closer to it.
